RALLY TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR USA PRO CYCLING RACE COMING TO BOULDER 2012
BOULDER, CO, AUGUST 17, 2011 - The greatest cyclists in the world will be racing in Colorado, August 22-28, in the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge; but, will not be coming through Boulder. On Wednesday evening August 17th, at 6:40 PM, before Band on the Bricks on the Pearl St. Mall, Boulder fans will host a rally to show race organizers the strong support for bringing the race to Boulder in 2012. While an effort was made to hold a stage here this year, the lack of hotel space due to the timing of the event and other factors made it financially prohibitive. However, increased funding opportunities (such as the passage last year of the increase in Boulder's hotel occupancy tax), economic returns demonstrated by this year’s race, and the potential for advance planning all are expected to assist a Boulder bid for 2012.Shawn Hunter, CEO of the Pro Cycling Challenge, will be at the rally. "We are well aware of Boulder's rich history in cycling. It's exciting for us to see the City taking steps to get the support it needs to bring this amazing event to Boulder in 2012." In addition to Hunter, organizers expect a surprise guest or two at the rally. The seven-day, 600 mile course, will involve 128 riders, including the 2011 Tour de France Champion, Cadel Evans, of Australia. Boulder's own, Team Garmin-Cervelo, will be competing, and are definitely considered a major player in the race. "The Garmin team won top team honors at this year's Tour de France; and, being a local Colorado team, they will certainly be a crowd favorite," says Hunter. The race is expected to be the largest spectator event in Colorado history. The rally will precede the final "Band on the Bricks" of the year, and utilize the stage for key speakers to talk about the event, and how Boulder can be a major player in 2012. "We learned a lot this year through the RFP process, and feel that the enthusiasm generated by next week's race will help launch efforts to bring the event to Boulder in 2012," says co-rally organizers, Andrew Shoemaker and Barry Siff. "In addition, Having Shawn Hunter here, we can really show the organization that Boulder is ready to do what it takes next year!"People are urged to ride their bikes to the rally, and arrive by 6:30 in front of the Courthouse on Pearl Street Mall. There will be sign-up sheets for those who want to help with the efforts going forward, as well as those who just want to express their support. Questions regarding the rally can be addressed to Barry Siff at 303-442-0041.Comments [1]
